The River Raisin Institute is excited to join the Earth Day Expo 2026 at Monroe County Community College, where we’ll showcase our Turtle Sculpture Contest, part of our Climate Literacy Program. Come see the turtle sculptures at the Expo and vote for your favorite! Stop by our table to learn about our other programs and the work we do to foster climate literacy in Monroe County.

Our Climate Literacy Program helps students, teachers, and communities explore the essential relationship between human actions and the climate system. Being climate literate means recognizing how our choices influence the world, understanding how climate change affects human health and ecosystems, and using science to make informed decisions. Through hands-on curriculum, teacher resources, and community partnerships, we help learners of all ages build this essential knowledge.

This year, features Shell Shocked! Turtles and Climate Change, a creative, science-based initiative exploring how climate change impacts turtles. Participating schools receive classroom resources and a turtle armature to complete using recycled and repurposed materials. Students learn how environmental change affects local species, practice sustainable habits, and use art and science together to tell stories of resilience.
