Earthen Block Construction Methods

Our goal is to promote expansion of natural building construction methods and renewable energy for residential applications in the Great Lakes region. Natural building combines local, natural or renewable building materials with easy-to-learn construction techniques that result in healthy, affordable, and high quality homes and buildings.

Earthen block construction is a method of natural building construction that is based on time-honored, indigenous methods and technologies of building with earth. The world's oldest structures are made from earthen materials. Earthen building methods include rammed earth, adobe, and compressed earth block.

We used natural building methods in the construction of a demonstration children's cottage at the Kensington Farm Learning Center in Brighton, Michigan.
